Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior a person exhibits to maintain power and control over another person. It can happen in families and in close or intimate relationships when a person tries to control another person through certain means such as physical, verbal, emotional or economic abuse, etc.

In a healthy relationship your partner makes you happy, there is open communication, you can agree on things, and you can be yourself without being afraid. If you don’t feel safe in your relationship, you are not alone. There are free and confidential services available to you in your language.

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS TO KNOW IF YOU MIGHT BE IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP:
- Does your partner’s temperament scare you?
- Are you fearful of disagreeing with him/her/them?
- Do you have to account for everything you do, everywhere you go, or every person you see in order to avoid upsetting him/her/them?
- Does your partner say he/she/ they love you after they’ve abused you?
- Do you distance yourself from friends and family to avoid making your partner jealous?
- Has he/she/they pressured you into having sexual relations with them when you didn’t want to?
- Are you afraid of leaving your partner because he/she/they have threatened to hurt you or themself?
- Do you feel intimidated or controlled by your partner?
- Has your partner abused you?
- Has your partner ever withheld medicine you needed for your health?
